Lazio

An Amazing Region To Be Discovered

Lazio

The profile of the Mount Circeo that stretches toward the sea is undoubtedly one of the most evocative protagonists of the south coast of this region. With its crystalline waters, its ancient villages on the sea, and its mythological references, it is part of one of the first protected natural areas, The National Park of the Circeo, also named after it.

Although talking about Lazio, we immediately think about Rome, undoubtedly this is an amazing region with a lot to be discovered. Of course, its provinces are all related to Roman history and papacy, but each of them proudly keeps its own identity and peculiarities.

The ancient Etruscan area, called Tuscia, fascinates the visitors with its sweet hills, its enchanting ravines, its magical old villages, and, of course, Viterbo, its main city and one of the “Cities of the Pope”.

The area of Rieti, perhaps the one less known, is a nature’s enchantments with its woods, rivers, and mountains. It is also a precious casket that hides pretty little villages with ancient culinary, religious, and spiritual traditions that permeate the entire province and are the most  authentic souls of these places.

The province of Frosinone, partly in the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, besides the natural beauties and historic locations, offers a wide variety of traditional food and wine to be tasted slowly and peacefully in its ancient villages.

The province of Latina is the one with delightful sandy beaches, the Pontine Islands, the magnificent Garden of Ninfa, and beautifully preserved ancient medieval villages also along its beautiful seacoast.

Lastly, the area of Rome is a vast territory that also includes : the Roman Castles, where the ancient noble families used to build magnificent mansion houses and villas; the UNESCO sites of Tivoli and old villages, castles, lakes and fabulous woods.

Furthermore, beyond Villa Adriana and Villa d’Este in Tivoli, other four UNESCO World Heritage sites are in this region: the historical centre of Rome, the Etruscan Necropolises of Cerveteri and Tarquinia and, in the immaterial patrimony, the Macchina di Santa Rosa of Viterbo.

My two-week itinerary of Rome and its neighboring towns was a mix of the obligatory “have to see” spots such as the Vatican, Coliseum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon. The places I would have never known was my favorite part. Places like Sperlonga, a small seaside town in Lazio; Civita Di Bagnoregio, a small hill town in Central Italy; Sermoneta, a very ancient village in southern Lazio; Castel Gandolfo near Lake Albano, where the Pope spends his summers; Tivoli, to visit the beautiful fountains at Villa D’Este and stroll the gardens. I would have never known about all the hidden gems that locals visit had Italy Wanderlust not planned a fantastic trip.
